Fall Prevention

I designed and developed this interactive and scenario-based eLearning concept project for newly-hired nursing assistants to practice fall prevention skills.

Overview

Audience: Newly-hired nursing aides in Memory Care and Assisted Living facilities

Responsibilities: Instructional Design, eLearning Development, Visual Design, Storyboarding, Action Mapping, Prototyping

Tools Used: Articulate Storyline 360, Vyond, Adobe Photoshop, MindMeister, Google Suite

Incidents of falling among residents at Epoch Senior Living facilities were on the rise.   This leads to a number of problems for residents including serious injury, restricted activities and depression as well increased emotional burden on caregivers.

After analyzing the performance problem, I confirmed that the nursing assistants lacked the skill and knowledge required to identify common risk factors and fall prevention techniques. I proposed an interactive and scenario-based eLearning experience where the nurses could practice identifying common risk factors and reacting to real life situations.  The learners goal is to prevent all falls for the day so every resident can attend "Yoga with Yolanda" class.

Our goal was to to reduce resident falling incidents by 20% for the year by providing new hires with a risk-free environment to make choices and see consequences. This helps the learner connect their choices with the real-world consequences. I also proposed incorporating a gamified “class camera” that reveals how the Yoga class is filling up. Finally, I suggested presenting success and failure notifications with additional information about the answer submissions; this reinforces the learned knowledge or provides the learner with the information needed to complete the course.

The client accepted my proposal and we proceeded with the project.
